To create it, Burns uses an approach called Pierced Relief, in which the entire thing is carved out of one hunk of wood with nothing added. He sells his handiwork on Etsy.

For me a consistent and even tool mark finish is hard to produce even though I've been carving since 1979. You really need to have a consistent technique and razor sharp tools to make it look good. Plus I happen to like a smooth finish.
