Some people have had their switches since day one and have no issues while others are in their second repair. I haven't read anything that says it's anything to do with the user (which is why Nintendo eventually started repairing them for free).

This is because the joy con drift is caused by the protective coating on the carbon contacts rubbing off. Causing the dust to spread, causing a false signal. They rectify this by extracting the old unit, and inserting the new one. WebbNintendo cheaped out on the sticks and used resistive pads to detect stick motion instead of rotational potentiometers like normal joysticks use.
